Choosing the Right Bike for You

Many different means of evaluating a bike make purchasing a new one difficult. Even for those people who are paid to ride, buying a new bike is hard. Considering the various factors makes purchasing a bike tough. You need to think about safety, comfort, what the bike will be used for, how often the bicycle will be used, where the bicycle will be used and, if we’re being honest: style. All the existing options make it hard to make a choice; this choice is made more difficult by all the emerging technologies. Here are some of the criteria you should use when you are buying your next cycling bicycle.

It is important to know how your bike comes to a stop. You need to make sure you understand how your brakes work and what kind of brakes you need your bike to have. Those who do not use their bikes very regularly will be happy with normal brakes, those which simply squeeze the tire with two small pads to slow the bike down. For more hardcore cycling on tough terrain you may want some better brakes. These disk brakes are perfect for serious bike use, they sit inside the wheel and will be able to handle heavy use without malfunction.

Are you going to need to accommodate extra accessories? Perhaps a basket to help you carry items will be helpful, should your bike be what you'll be using most. Will you ever carry a child on your bike? Needing a child seat attachment will alter which bikes you can choose from. Do you think you'll ever tow anything behind the bike? Your new bike needs to support the weight of the trailer if this is your plan.

It is important you allow for room between you and the crossbar. When selecting a bike make sure you move the seat up slightly, to around a few inches above the height of the crossbar. Your feet should still comfortably rest on the ground. Each type of bike will require differing clearance amounts. As an example, with a touring bike you will only require around 1". For mountain bikes you will require somewhere around 3 inches.

When you get a bike your main goal should be to find one that physically suits you. Selecting a bike with a good fit for you is of the utmost importance, when using a bike as the main way to get from A to B. Safety is important when on a bike but try this out do not overlook comfort, otherwise those long rides will soon grow tiresome.
